Chapter 3

Matt. 3:1 In those days came John the Immerser, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

Matt. 3:2 and saying, repent: for the kingdom of the heavens is at hand!

Matt. 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare you the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.

Matt. 3:4 The same John had his clothing of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Matt. 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan,

Matt. 3:6 and were immersed by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

Matt. 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees came to his immersion, he said to them, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath about to come?

Matt. 3:8 Therefore bring forth fruits fit for repentance:

Matt. 3:9 think not to say within yourselves, we have Abraham as our father: for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

Matt. 3:10 Now also the ax is laid at the root of the trees: therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.

Matt. 3:11 I indeed immerse you with water to repentance: but He that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to untie: He will immerse you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:

Matt. 3:12 whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Matt. 3:13 Then came Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be immersed by him.

Matt. 3:14 But John tried to hinder Him, saying, I have need to be immersed by You, and You come to me?

Matt. 3:15 Jesus answered and said to him, permit it to be so now: for so it is proper for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he permitted Him.

Matt. 3:16 Then Jesus, when He was immersed, went up directly out of the water: and behold, the heavens opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and resting on Him:

Matt. 3:17 and behold a voice from heaven, saying, this is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
