Chapter 26

Matt. 26:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples,

Matt. 26:2 you know that after two days is the feast of the Passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

Matt. 26:3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

Matt. 26:4 and consulted that they might take Jesus by trickery, and kill Him.

Matt. 26:5 But they said, not on the feast day, unless there be a disturbance among the people.

Matt. 26:6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

Matt. 26:7 there came to him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as He sat to eat.

Matt. 26:8 But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, to what purpose is this waste?

Matt. 26:9 For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor.

Matt. 26:10 When Jesus understood it, He said to them, why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work upon Me.

Matt. 26:11 For you always have the poor with you; but Me you do not have always.

Matt. 26:12 For in that she has poured this ointment on My body, she did it for My burial.

Matt. 26:13 Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel will be preached in the entire world, that also which this woman has done will be told for a memorial of her.

Matt. 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,

Matt. 26:15 and said to them, what will you give me, and I will deliver Him to you? And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him.

Matt. 26:16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

Matt. 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, where do You want us to prepare the Passover for You to eat?

Matt. 26:18 He said, go into the city to such a man, and say to him, the Master says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.

Matt. 26:19 Then the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover.

Matt. 26:20 Now when the evening had come, He sat down with the twelve.

Matt. 26:21 As they did eat, He said, truly I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.

Matt. 26:22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each one of them began to say to Him, Lord, is it I?

Matt. 26:23 He answered and said, He that dips his hand with Me in the dish, the same will betray Me.

Matt. 26:24 The Son of man goes as it is written of Him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It had been good for that man if he had not been born.

Matt. 26:25 Then Judas, who betrayed Him, answered, and said, Master, is it I? He said to him, you have said it.

Matt. 26:26 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is My body.

Matt. 26:27 And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, drink you all of it;

Matt. 26:28 for this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Matt. 26:29 But I say to you, from now on I will not drink of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.

Matt. 26:30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Matt. 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, all you will be offended because of Me this night: for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered abroad.

Matt. 26:32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

Matt. 26:33 Peter answered and said to Him, though all men will be offended because of You, yet I will never be offended.

Matt. 26:34 Jesus said to him, truly, I say to you, that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.

Matt. 26:35 Peter said to Him, though I should die with You, yet I will not deny You. All the disciples said likewise.

Matt. 26:36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, sit here, while I go and pray over there.

Matt. 26:37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and in distress.

Matt. 26:38 Then said He to them, My soul is severely grieved, even to death: stay here, and watch with Me.

Matt. 26:39 He went a little farther, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as You will.

Matt. 26:40 And He came to the disciples, and found them asleep, and said to Peter, so, you were not able to stay awake with Me for one hour?

Matt. 26:41 Stay awake and pray, that you will not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is powerless.

Matt. 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, unless I drink it, Your will be done.

Matt. 26:43 Then He came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

Matt. 26:44 And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

Matt. 26:45 Then came He to His disciples, and said to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Matt. 26:46 Rise, let us be going: behold, the one betraying Me is at hand.

Matt. 26:47 While He yet spoke, look, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

Matt. 26:48 Now he that betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying, whomever I will kiss, it is He: seize Him.

Matt. 26:49 Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, rejoice, master; and kissed Him.

Matt. 26:50 Jesus said to him, comrade, why are you here? Then they came and laid hands-on Jesus and seized him.

Matt. 26:51 And, behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

Matt. 26:52 Then Jesus said to him, put up again your sword into its place: for all they that take the sword will perish by the sword.

Matt. 26:53 Do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will demonstrate at My side more than twelve legions of angels?

Matt. 26:54 But how then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?

Matt. 26:55 Jesus said in that same hour to the multitudes, have you come out as against a thief with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and you laid no hand on Me.

Matt. 26:56 But all this must happen, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled.

Matt. 26:57 And they that had seized Jesus took Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

Matt. 26:58 But Peter followed him far off to the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the attendants, to see the end.

Matt. 26:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false testimony against Jesus, to put him to death;

Matt. 26:60 but found none: yes, though many false witnesses came, yet they found none. At last there came two false witnesses,

Matt. 26:61 and said, this fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

Matt. 26:62 And the high priest arose, and said to Him, You have nothing to say? What is it which these witness against You?

Matt. 26:63 But Jesus held His peace, and the high priest answered and said to Him, I charge You by the living God, tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.

Matt. 26:64 Jesus said to him, you have said it: nevertheless I say to you, everyone here will see the Son of man sitting at the right of power, and coming in the cloud of heaven.

Matt. 26:65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further do we need of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard His blasphemy.

Matt. 26:66 What do you think? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

Matt. 26:67 Then they did spit in His face, and hit Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,

Matt. 26:68 saying, prophesy to us, You Christ, who is he that hit You?

Matt. 26:69 Now Peter sat outside in the palace: and a maid came to him, saying, you also were with Jesus of Galilee.

Matt. 26:70 But he denied before them all, saying, I do not know what you are saying.

Matt. 26:71 And when he had gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said to them that were there, this fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

Matt. 26:72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the Man.

Matt. 26:73 Now after a while they came to him that stood by, and said to Peter, surely you also are one of them; for your speech betrays you.

Matt. 26:74 Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, I do not know the Man. And immediately the rooster crowed.

Matt. 26:75 Then Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said to him, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly.
