Chapter 23

Matt. 23:1 Then spoke Jesus to the multitude, and to His disciples,

Matt. 23:2 saying the scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

Matt. 23:3 therefore all whatsoever they tell you observe, that observe and do; but do not you after their works: for they do not practice what they preach.

Matt. 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Matt. 23:5 But all their works they do to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

Matt. 23:6 and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

Matt. 23:7 and greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

Matt. 23:8 But be not you called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all of you are brothers.

Matt. 23:9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, who is in heaven.

Matt. 23:10 Neither you be called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

Matt. 23:11 But he that is greatest among you will be your servant.

Matt. 23:12 For whoever will exalt himself will be humbled; and he that will humble himself will be exalted.

Matt. 23:13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men: for you neither go in yourselves, nor permit them who are entering to go in.

Matt. 23:14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: therefore you will receive the more extreme judgment.

Matt. 23:15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cover sea and land to make one convert, and when he is made, you make him twice the son of Gehenna than yourselves.

Matt. 23:16 Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, whoever will swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever will swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

Matt. 23:17 You fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

Matt. 23:18 And, whoever will swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is guilty.

Matt. 23:19 You fools and blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

Matt. 23:20 Therefore whoever will swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things on it.

Matt. 23:21 And whoever will swear by the temple, swears by it, and by Him that dwells in it.

Matt. 23:22 And he that will swear by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by Him that sits on it.

Matt. 23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin but have left out the weightier matters of the Law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these you should have done, and not leave the other undone.

Matt. 23:24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Matt. 23:25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Matt. 23:26 You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Matt. 23:27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed sepulchers which indeed appear beautiful outwardly but are inside full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness.

Matt. 23:28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Matt. 23:29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

Matt. 23:30 and say, if we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

Matt. 23:31 Therefore you are witnesses to yourselves, that you are the sons of those who killed the prophets.

Matt. 23:32 Fill you up then the measure of your fathers.

Matt. 23:33 You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you avoid the Judgment of Gehenna?

Matt. 23:34 Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them will you whip in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

Matt. 23:35 that upon you should be coming all the righteous blood shed on the land, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

Matt. 23:36 Truly I say to you, all these things will be coming upon this generation!

Matt. 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone those who are sent to you, how often I would have gathered your children together figuratively as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!

Matt. 23:38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

Matt. 23:39 For I say to you, you will not see Me afterwards, until you will say, blessed is He that is coming in the name of the Lord!
