Chapter 14

1st Cor.14:1 Strive to gain love, and be zealous for spirituality, and more that you may be prophesying.

1st Cor.14:2 For he that speaks in a tongue speaks not to people, but to God: for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

1st Cor.14:3 But he that prophesies speaks to people for building up, and exhortation, and comfort.

1st Cor.14:4 He that speaks in a tongue builds up himself; but he that prophesies builds up the Assembly.

1st Cor.14:5 I desire that you all spoke in a tongue, but rather that you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks in a tongue, unless he interprets, that the Assembly may receive building up.

1st Cor.14:6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in a tongue, what will I profit you, unless I will speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching?

1st Cor.14:7 And even things without life giving sound, whether flute or harp, unless they give a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played?

1st Cor.14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for the battle?

1st Cor.14:9 So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will speak into the air.

1st Cor.14:10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without significance.

1st Cor.14:11 Therefore if I do not know the meaning of the sound, I will be to him that speaks as a foreigner, and he that speaks will be a foreigner to me.

1st Cor.14:12 Even so you, since you are eager for the Spirit, seek that you may transcend into the building up of the Assembly.

1st Cor.14:13 Therefore let him that speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

1st Cor.14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is not profited.

1st Cor.14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the mind also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the mind also.

1st Cor.14:16 Otherwise when you will bless with the spirit, how will he that occupies the room of the uninformed say Amen at your giving of thanks, because he does not see what you are saying?

1st Cor.14:17 For you are really giving thanks well, but the other is not built up.

1st Cor.14:18 I thank my God, I speak in a tongue more than you all:

1st Cor.14:19 yet in the Assembly I had rather speak five words with my mind, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

1st Cor.14:20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding: however in wickedness be children, but in understanding be mature.

1st Cor.14:21 In the Law it is written, with one of another tongue and in different lips I will speak to this people; and
in this manner they will not hear Me says the LORD.

1st Cor.14:22 Therefore the tongue is for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that do not believe: but prophesying serves not for them that do not believe, but for those who believe.

1st Cor.14:23 If therefore the whole Assembly comes together into one place, and all speak in a tongue, and there come in those that are uninformed, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are insane?

1st Cor.14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believes not, or one uninformed, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

1st Cor.14:25 and thus the secrets of his heart are made evident; and so, falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is certainly in you.

1st Cor.14:26 How is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, and has an interpretation. Let all things be performed for the building!

1st Cor.14:27 If any man speaks in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and each by turn; and let one interpret.

1st Cor.14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the Assembly; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

1st Cor.14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the others discuss.

1st Cor.14:30 If anything be revealed to another that sits by, let the first hold his peace.

1st Cor.14:31 For you may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be encouraged.

1st Cor.14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

1st Cor.14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all the Assemblies of the saints.

1st Cor.14:34 The wives must be silent in the Assemblies; for they are not permitted to talk randomly, but they must be in submission, just as the Law also says,

1st Cor.14:35 but if they want to learn something let them ask their own husbands at home. For it is inappropriate for wives to talk randomly in the Assembly.

1st Cor.14:36 What? Did the word of God originate from you? Or did it originate from you only?

1st Cor.14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

1st Cor.14:38 But if anyone does not acknowledge this, let him not be acknowledged.

1st Cor.14:39 Therefore, brothers, eagerly desire to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

1st Cor.14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
